Synchronizing eld values to a consistent state is essential. When a parallel duplicated mesh entity has a different eld value (for the same eld) on two or more processors, then that eld value is parallel inconsistent, and it is ambiguous as to which processor has the correct value. Furthermore, such parallel inconsistent data could be given to the calling solver algorithm potentially leading to parallel processing deadlocks, livelocks, or other undesired behavior. For example, an iterative equation solver algorithm uses the norm of a residual to determine whether the solution has converged; if it has not converged, then the algorithm performs another iteration. If the norm of the residual is parallel inconsistent and near the convergence threshold, then some processors would exit the iteration loop while others would attempt to continue in the loop. At this point, the processors are desynchronized with respect to their computations and communications, leading to undesirable parallel processing behavior. Model Algorithms Never Communicate: All parallel synchronization required by a model algorithm must be performed by either the framework s algorithm executer or by the solver algorithm invoking the model algorithm. This restriction is intended to address two concerns. First, consistent and deterministic (i.e., repeatable) parallel

Table 27.7 shows the cost of the LTVS prototype, including hardware and software installed at HCCII but excluding system design, software devlopment, implementation, and evaluation time. The cost of LTVS also includes the annual license fees for facial identi cation biometric system; purchased hardware and software are at an education discount price. 27.7 ALTERNATIVE IDENTIFICATION DEVICES 27.7.1 System Design To address the biometric veri cation component and determine which biometric system is the best for given applications in the complex clinical environment, the ngerprint scan system was added on the LTVS to run parallel with the facial recognition systems. Each solution was evalutated and documented for the advantages and pitfalls in the clinical environment. Figure 27.13 is a slight modi cation of Fig. 27.6 in whcih the ngerprint scanning system is added onto the FRS (facial recognition system) to become FRSS (facial and ngerprint recognition system). Because of the modular design of the LTVS, such a mdoifccaiton was not dif cult to accomplish.

Within the COMMAND function, you can use the PAUSE function to pause the operation of the routine and enable user input, such as picking a point or typing a value. For example, the expression (command circle pause 3 ) pauses to let the user specify a center point and then creates a circle with a radius of 3. Notice the function ENTSEL in the next exercise. This is a type of shorthand for SSGET. Use it when you want to limit the user to selecting a single object. ENTSEL returns an entity name and the coordinates of your pick point in a dotted-pair list. Therefore, you can use CAR before ENTSEL to get the entity name for ENTGET. There is also a new argument for getstring, T. If you use this argument and it isn t nil, users can place spaces in the input. Using this argument enables users to type a text value that includes more than one word. Without the T, AutoLISP would interpret a space as equivalent to pressing Enter.
